The puppy was wet from the snow, shivering and had string tied around its nose, the borough of Roseland said in a release. The puppy had a right rear leg injury and was limping and was not groomed in months, authorities said.

Officers provided the puppy with food and water and removed ice that had clung to its fur, authorities said.

The puppy was later transferred to an animal hospital where it underwent surgery to repair a broken femur bone, authorities said. The puppy is being cared for by Big Dog Rescue Project while it awaits adoption.

"I want to thank Big Dog Rescue for taking the lead to raise the funds to pay for the care and surgeries required and to help find a suitable home for this dog that deserved much better than its last owner," Roseland Mayor James Spango said.

Anyone who would like to donate to cover the cost and care of the dog can Venmo @bigdogreescueproject, or at bigdogrescueproject.com/donate.
